I once worked with a team that had a “Legacy Code Support Group.” It started as a joke - complete with “Hi, my name is Dave, and I work with legacy code” introductions. But it evolved into a valuable forum where people could share their frustrations, celebrations, and war stories.
Everyone Has a Story
That developer who seems resistant to change? They might be the one who stayed up three nights straight fixing that system five years ago. That manager who keeps postponing the modernization budget? They might be the one whose neck is on the line if something goes wrong. That ops person who questions every change? They’re probably the one who gets called at 3 AM when things break.
Understanding these stories - and respecting them - is often the difference between success and failure.
Technology problems are really people problems in disguise. Solve the people part, and the technology usually falls into place.
